At the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) laboratory in Lund, a facility f
or Al-26 analysis is under development. The sensitivity is expected to be s
everal orders of magnitude higher than with standard mass spectrometry. The
planned biomedical program includes studies of aluminium uptake, distribut
ion and retention in man. The initial work has been concentrated on the con
struction and testing of a new dedicated injector for the accelerator and o
n the preparation of biological samples for aluminium. analysis. The curren
t quality of the facility is presented and the first experimental results r
eported. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
