The large deflection analysis of a pre-stressed annular plate with a centra
l rigid boss subjected to axisymmetric loading is presented. The factors af
fecting the transition from plate behaviour to membrane behaviour (e.g. thi
ckness, in-plane tension and material properties) are studied. The effect o
f boss size and pre-tension on the effective, stiffness of the plate are in
vestigated. The extent of the bending boundary layers at the edges of the p
late are quantified. All results are presented in non-dimensional form. The
design implications for microelectromechanical system components are asses
sed.
