Synthesis and crystal structure of 1,1 '-bis[4-(2,2 ': 6 ',2 ''-terpyridin-4 '-yl)phenyl]octamethylferrocene

1,1'-Bis[4-(2,2':6',2"-terpyridin-4'-yl)phenyl]octamethylferrocene was prep ared from iron(II) chloride and lithiated 4'-[4-(2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclope nta-1,3-dien-l-yl)phenyl]-2,2':6',2"-terpyridin and was structurally charac terised by X-ray diffraction, which revealed pronounced pi -stacking of the six-membered aromatic rings. Its electrochemistry was investigated by cycl ic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry and compared with that o f related compounds. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
