Halicephalobus gingivalis is a ubiquitous saprophytic nematode that infects
humans and horses and appears to have a tropism for the CNS and kidneys in
horses.
In infected horses, the disease is rapidly fatal once clinical signs of CNS
involvement develop.
In horses with localized H gingivalis granulomas, treatment with high doses
of ivermectin in combination with surgical debulking may be successful.
