Case Report: We report a 52-year-old-female patient with cholangiocarcinoma
who developed severe bone marrow suppression after taking Selaginella doed
erleinii as an alternative anticancer treatment. She developed severe pancy
topenia with initial presentations of skin ecchymosis, itching, and gum ble
eding 2 weeks after taking Selaginella doederleinii daily. Bone marrow smea
r and biopsy showed severe hypocellularity, with no malignant cell infiltra
tion. Approximately 1 week after stopping Selaginella doederleinii, her hem
ogram returned to previous levels. Selaginella doedeleinii, a popular antic
ancer herb, may contain an as yet unidentified substance that contributes t
o reversible bone marrow suppression.
