Fungi have an etiological factor of between 2-13% in bovine mastitis, with
Anascogenic yeast of the Candida genus being the most frequently isolated.
Sources of infection are mainly found in the animal's immediate surrounding
s i.e. in feed, litter, milking cups and veterinary equipment infected with
the fungi. Factors conducive to the disease occurring include: organism hy
poimmunity, udder tissue irritation due to traumas, bacterial infections an
d intramammary introduction of drugs. Mastitis mycotica often follows long-
term antibiotic treatment of bacterial mastitis. Mycotic, inflammation of t
he udder can assume a clinical (acute or chronic), subclinical or latent fo
rm. No satisfactory method of therapy has been devised so far. This work is
a review of the literature and data regarding therapy using quinosol, crys
tal violet, mercury preparation, iodine, undecylenic acid, polymyxin B, sul
phametoxypiridozines, polyenic antibiotics and imidasol derivitants.
