Abstract
Studying moving holographic gratings in a Bi12TiO20 crystal with an ap plied external field. we have observed the appearance of a ''shape-asy mmetry'' in the diffraction efficiency as a function of frequency detu ning. The effect is mainly absorption-induced: for large modulation de pth it is further enhanced by the influence of higher harmonics. (C) 1 997 Elsevier Science B.V.
