Single-crystal films of the Ba0.87Bi0.13Al3.96Fe8.04O19 hexagonal ferrite w
ere prepared by liquid-phase epitaxy on single-crystal plates of the nonmag
netic material SrGa12O19, whose crystal structure is similar to that of the
film grown on it. A Mossbauer study of the films revealed that the magneti
c moments of the iron ions in the bulk of a film are perpendicular to the f
ilm growth plane, whereas the moments of the ions residing in a surface lay
er similar to 300-nm thick are canted away from the normal of the film by 3
0 degrees +/- 5 degrees. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".
