Apoptosis in the heart: About programmed cell death and survival

Substantial evidence has accumulated that apoptosis, sometimes called "prog rammed cell death," is important in several cardiac diseases. Although most researchers focus on apoptosis in the hope that by understanding its mecha nisms one can block this form of cell death, little attention has been give n to programmed cell survival.
