Migraine and tension headaches are among the most common diagnoses in women
's health. Secondary causes of headache such as brain tumor, subarachnoid h
emorrhage, and meningitis are uncommon but must not be missed. A careful hi
story and physical examination, use of diagnostic criteria, and certain fac
ts about the serious causes of headache are the keys to diagnosis and treat
ment. Neuroimaging should be limited to patients displaying signs or sympto
ms of a secondary headache cause. Menstrual migraine can be managed similar
ly to nonmenstrual migraine.
