A series of unsymmetrical tridentate dianionic Schiff bases derived fr
om substituted salicylaldehyde and ethanol and propanolamine were prep
ared and characterised by elemental analyses, IR and H-1 NMR spectrosc
opy. The interaction of these bases with Mn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O has been s
tudied, leading to the preparation of manganese(III) perchlorate compl
exes. All the Schiff base ligands H2L yield 1:1 compounds [MnL(H2O)(2)
]ClO4.nH(2)O (n = 1 - 3). The resultant complexes were characterised b
y elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy and magnetic measurements.
