The technique of isomer decay tagging (IDT) has been recently implemented a
t Oak Ridge National Laboratory to identify strongly deformed bands above a
short-lived isomer in Y-80. The IDT method provides very clean reaction ch
annel selection of prompt in-beam decays by correlating these events with d
elayed events detected at the focal plane of a recoil separator. Using this
method, coincident transitions above and below a 4.7 mus isomer in Y-80 we
re observed. The placement of this isomer in the Y-80 level scheme is furth
er confirmed and the deformed structure of the rotational bands built on th
e isomer is discussed.
