Abstract
This paper represents the hysteretic energy performance of twelve steel mom ent-resisting frames intentionally designed by three different design proce dures. The three types of design procedure were: (1) strength controlled de sign; (2) strength and drift controlled design; and (3) strong-column/weak- beam controlled design. The energy performances of the so-designed frames w ere discussed in view of the effects of strength variations, stiffness vari ations, and plastic mechanism variations, on the hysteretic energy input an d its distribution in multiple storey frames. An empirical mean hysteretic energy formula has been proposed based on this study. Copyright (C) 2001 Jo hn Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
