This short review gives several examples of the current status of xenobioti
c biotransformation reactions and oxidative stress responses in plants as b
iomarkers of organic pollution in aquatic environments. Based on previous b
asic knowledge, several biomonitoring programmes have been successfully app
lied during the last decade.
