Background: Measurement of aggression is a critical component of studies of
pathological aggression and suicidality. The Buss Durkee Hostility Invento
ry (BDHI) is one of the most frequently used selfreport measures of aggress
ion. Spanish is a language used by nations on three continents and yet, the
re is no Spanish version of this instrument. Method: The adaptation process
included: translation, backtranslation, review of both versions and applic
ation of the resulting instrument to a bilingual sample from the target pop
ulation. This process allowed for assessment of the equivalence between the
English and Spanish Version of the BDHI in three stages: linguistic equiva
lence, conceptual equivalence and scale equivalence. Result: The conceptual
and scale equivalence are adequate in this Spanish version of the BDHI. Co
nclusion: This adaptation of the BDHI is ready to be used in Spanish speaki
ng populations.
