In order to explain the dependence of the distribution coefficient (D)
between water and three different chlorinated solvents (methylene chl
oride, chloroform and 1,2-dichloroethane) of some alpha-amino acids (l
eucine, tryptophane, phenylalanine, methionine, valine and isoleucine)
, as supramolecular complexes of [EC...R-CH-(NH3)-COOH](+)A- type, (EC
= 18-C-6; A- = the anion originated in tropaeoline 00), a correlation
was established by means of a multilinear regression analysis perform
ed between different characteristics of the alpha-amino acids and thos
e of the solvents involved. This study evidenced a good correlation (r
> 0.81) between some of the characteristics of alpha-amino acids (pi,
pH(i), pKa(2)), and of the solvent (Sigma beta(2)(H), pi(2)(H), R-2(H
) or Sigma alpha(2)(H)), just mentioned.
