A model of thalamic system combining properties of lumped and single repres
entative neuron type models was constructed. It includes data on intrinsic
ionic currents and allows for direct comparison of model output with observ
ables derived from the scalp EEG. The model accounts for: waxing and waning
of sleep spindles, topographical differences in their spectra and in the s
low rhythm of their reappearance in the scalp EEG, differences in the rhyth
m of spindles' reappearance reported in vivo and in vitro. The model also d
escribes rhythms in awake and in deep sleep EEG. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science
