Abstract
Phase transformations in implanted iron may strongly depend on the sample t hickness. The effect essentially relies on lower impurity concentration req uired for given phase formation in thin films when compared with thick laye rs or bulk samples. The phase transformation in thin films is also more com plete, a full transformation of thin Fe layers into iron nitrides was obser ved, whereas in thick or bulk samples about 20% of Fe atoms remain in cryst alline alpha -Fe phase.
