Bis(10-phenyl-9-dianthryloxy)methane has been designed and synthesized to s
erve as an excimer fluorescence probe taking advantage of the remarkable fl
exibility of the chain linking the two aromatic rings. Spectroscopic study
and transient kinetic analysis have been performed in media of various pola
rity and viscosity. The dual fluorescence (monomer/excimer) is markedly aff
ected by the viscosity of a series of silicon oils (polydimethylsiloxanes).
