This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical analyses of h
igh particle laden turbulent flows. The dispersed phase consists of non-rea
cting solid mono-dispersed particles with variable diameter between 60 mum
and 1500 mum. Experiments using Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) and Phase Do
ppler Anemometer (PDA) show in agreement with earlier investigations that s
mall particles attenuate turbulence while large particles enhance turbulenc
e. More detailed investigations are, however, needed to clearly identify an
d quantify such influences. In order to obtain preliminary information abou
t the performance of the k-epsilon model, mostly used for the majority of t
he numerical models, in predicting the physical features of modulation, som
e numerical calculation results obtained by use of Euler / Lagrange method
and a modified version of the k-epsilon model are compared to the experimen
tal data.
