This paper provides a new approach to the computer-aided design of distribu
ted (D) regions of concrete structures. An optimization approach is used to
define the topology of the equivalent truss structure (location and amount
of reinforcement, and position of compressive struts) needed to provide a
specified load capacity while requiring an absolute minimum volume of reinf
orcement. The algorithms (and software) include two new features: 1) a prac
ticality factor beta to avoid the generation of impractical reinforcement l
ayout; and 2) a stress redistribution factor alpha related to the total pla
stic energy required in developing the capacity of a given truss. Compariso
ns between alternate optimal solutions and between theory and experiment ar
e provided.
