The luminescence of divalent manganese in GdF3:Ce3+, Mn2+ has been stu
died. Excitation in the absorption band of Ce3+ results in a green Mn2
+ emission with a maximum at 520 nm at 4.2 K. Upon Ce3+ excitation, en
ergy transfer takes place to Mn2+ via energy migration over the Gd3+ s
ublattice. For the Mn2+ emission in this compound a decay time of 21 m
s is found. No clear evidence for shortening of the decay time by magn
etic interactions with Gd3+ ions is observed. (C) 1997 Published by El
