Abstract
Simian virus 40, a DNA tumor virus that causes mesothelioma in hamsters and transforms human cells in tissue culture, has been recently detected in hu man mesotheliomas. In these tumors, the SV40 large-T antigen binds and inac tivates several tumor suppressors, including p53, leaving the cell more vul nerable to other carcinogens, including asbestos.
