Abstract
Simultaneous heat and mass transfer can take place in a heterogeneous mater ial in both the continuous and the dispersed phase. Expressions for the eff ective material properties (diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity) are given. Thermal diffusion (the Soret-effect) and the diffusion thermoef fect (the Dufour-effect) are included in the model. With the result, the ef fective heat and mass Auras can be calculated when the gradients in effecti ve concentration and temperature are given. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
