A 27-year-old woman presented to a hospital with symptoms resembling pyelon
ephritis; respiratory distress did not develop until nearly a day after adm
ission and she subsequently died. The Unexplained Deaths and Critical Illne
sses Project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Si
n Nombre virus infection by the results of serological testing and sequenci
ng of the viral genome; staining of Sin Nombre virus antigen in the pulmona
ry capillaries was relatively weak.
