Between 23 degrees 30 and 25 degrees 30 Long East, i.e. over a distance of
approximately 200 km, the morphology, sedimentary cover and geological stru
ctures of the continental margin of Libya have been analysed using swath ba
thymetry and seismic reflection data recorded during Prismed 2 survey. This
segment of the Mesozoic African continental margin of the Mediterranean Se
a shows three distinct areas characterized by contrasted morphologies and g
eologic structures. Such variability is partly explained by differential ov
erthrusting of the Mediterranean ridge over its foreland, the Libyan contin
ental slope, and by incipient continental collision processes. (C) 2001 Aca
