Abstract
The author of the present paper deals with the development of Central Europ ean nations from late Antiquity till the beginning of the 11th century. He states that the spread of the Slavs had started long before the Avars' arri val, after the year 568, after the Longobards had left Panonia. According t o the author, Moravians were the only Slavonic nation who was able to end i ts ethno-genesis in Avars' empire, claimed for by the Francs then, and crea te their own state. In the year 822 there is the last mention about the Ava rs in the Franc documents and the Moravians are mentioned for the first tim e. In spite of the fact that Methodius did not find Svatopluk's support, th e works by Constantine and Methodius, written in national Slavonic language , survived. The Hungarians, who had arrived before Svatopluk died, threaten ed the Moravian state and caused the division of the Empire.
