Abstract
Gingerenone-A 5, a diarylheptenone from Zingiber officinale, has been synth esized from vanillin 1 in four steps with an overall yield of 15%. Demethyl ation of 5 with A(1)Cl(3) gives hirsutenone 6, a metabolite of Alnus hirsut e, in 36% yield. The spectral data of 5 and 6 are in agreement with those o f natural metabolites 5 and 6 acid both the compounds exhibited weak antiba cterial activity.
