We review some of our recent work on LZ-based, single-pass, adaptive algori
thms for the compression of digital images. Our approach combines dictionar
y techniques from adaptive lossless text compression with quantization tech
niques to obtain single-pass, highly adaptive compression algorithms that a
llow the compression-fidelity tradeoff to be continuously adjusted, and len
