SbSI nanorods have been prepared by a known hydrothermal method at 180-190
degreesC for the first time. X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission elect
ron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) are used to character
ize the products. The as-synthesized SbSI crystalline displays a rod-like m
orphology with diameters of 20-50 nm and lengths up to several micrometers.
The fundamental absorption edge of the SbSI nanorods is shifted to the sho
rter wavelength in comparison with that of bulk SbSI crystals. A possible m
echanism for the formation of the SbSI nanorods is proposed. (C) 2001 Elsev
