The influence of different doping ions on the emission and scintillation ch
aracteristics of PbWO4 scintillator was studied. In the case of Ce doping,
efficient non-radiative recombination at Ce sites takes place, resulting in
lower light yield and faster luminescence and scintillation response. Low
temperature thermoluminescence characteristics resemble those obtained earl
ier for La3+ (Y3+,Lu3+,Gd3+) doping ions. Tb3+, Sm3+ and Pr3+ doping result
s in an additional emission-the leading emission lines are obtained at 543,
641 and 602 nm, respectively. Corresponding decay times were measured to b
e 650, 848 and 61 mus at 295 K, respectively. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V
