The problems of promoting and maintaining competence in practising pro
fessionals are shared by educators and practitioners in the medical, n
ursing and allied professions. The dynamic Knowledge base of these res
earch and practice-based professions requires first to be reflected in
the Knowledge base of the individuals. Second, it must also be eviden
t in the initial and continuing education programmes which are designe
d with the aim of producing competent practising professionals. The au
thors have developed a progressive programme aimed initially at the ed
ucation of nurses but which has application to the above professions.
