The extraction of indium( III) with 25,26,27,28-tetrakis[(ethoxycarbonyl)me
thoxy]-p-tert-butylcalix[4] arene (L) into 1,2-dichloroethane was investiga
ted. The presence of Na+ and Br- in the aqueous phase was necessary for the
extraction. The study showed that the In(III) was extracted by forming an
ion-pair compound of [NaL+][InBr4-]. The effect of competing ions on the ex
traction of In( III) was examined. The corresponding extracted complex [NaL
][InBr4] was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and X-ray
structure analysis. The complex crystallized in the monoclinic space group
P21/c with a = 14.504(3), b = 23.270(5), c = 20.290(4) Angstrom, beta = 93
.02(3)degrees, V = 6893(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4.
