The influence of taper contamination on the static and dynamic characterist
ics of a slider is studied in detail. Two models of taper contamination are
investigated. The investigation studies the effect of skew angle, the numb
er of tapers contaminated, and the amount of contaminants on the flying cha
racteristics on the slider. Calculations show that irrespective of the mode
ls considered and the number of tapers contaminated, the static and dynamic
characteristics of the slider show little change even with a large amount
of contaminants. However, once the amount of contaminant exceeds a certain
limit, the flying altitude of the slider is degraded and can cause head-dis
k interaction. When the skew angle is large, it may either ameliorate or de
teriorate the flying characteristics of the slider depending on the slider
attitude when the transverse airflow passes through it.
