Fe3Al/Al2O3 ceramic composites are some of the novel ceramic composites tha
t have good application prospects as cutting tools and forming dies. In thi
s paper, the effects of different sintering technologies on the microstruct
ure of these composites are compared and analysed, the optical micrograph o
f the composite sample made by different ratio and hot press sintering tech
nology being observed and studied. The results of experiment indicate that
Fe3Al/Al2O3 composites with fine grains, compact structure and good mechani
cal properties can be obtained at about 1400 degreesC. Furthermore, in addi
tion to the sintering pressure, the content of Al2O3 and the additives of t
he composites, also have an important influence on their sintering temperat
ure, microstructure and characteristics. When adjusting the factors appropr
iately, the composites can be sintered at low temperature. (C) 2001 Elsevie
