N. Gisin, Coherent quantum measurement for the direct determination of the degree ofpolarization and polarization mode dispersion compensation, J MOD OPT, 48(8), 2001, pp. 1397-1403
An example of a coherent measurement for the direct evaluation of the degre
e of polarization of a single-mode optical beam is presented. It is applied
to the case of great practical importance where depolarization is caused b
y polarization mode dispersion. It is demonstrated that coherent measuremen
t has the potential of significantly increasing the information gain, compa
red to standard incoherent measurements.
