Abstract
We study experimentally and numerically the statistical conductance propert ies of Al breaking nanocontacts at room temperature. The measured conductan ce histogram (CH) from hundreds of consecutive experiments exhibits peaks c lose to integer values in units of 2e(2)/h. The results are compared with m inimum-cross-section histograms obtained from molecular dynamics calculatio ns. The agreement between these atomistic simulations and experiments provi des evidence that the CH is a signature of favourable atomic configurations .
