We study experimentally and numerically the statistical conductance propert
ies of Al breaking nanocontacts at room temperature. The measured conductan
ce histogram (CH) from hundreds of consecutive experiments exhibits peaks c
lose to integer values in units of 2e(2)/h. The results are compared with m
inimum-cross-section histograms obtained from molecular dynamics calculatio
ns. The agreement between these atomistic simulations and experiments provi
des evidence that the CH is a signature of favourable atomic configurations
.
