Abstract
This paper describes a hybrid photon detector with integrated silicon pixel readout to be used in the ring imaging Chsrenkov detectors of the LHCb exp eriment. The photon detector is based on a cross-focussed image intensifier tube geometry where the image is de-magnified by a factor of 5. The anode consists of a silicon pixel array, bump-bonded to a binary readout chip wit h matching pixel electronics. The paper starts with the general specificati on of the baseline option, followed by a summary of the main results achiev ed so far during the R&D phase. It concludes with a description of the rema ining work towards the final photon detector. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V . All rights reserved.
