Abstract
Target behavior under the impact of similar to 100 kJ 20 200 ns ion pulses is investigated. Beam parameters are close to the expected parameters of TW AC-ITEP and SIS upgrade accelerators. The influence of spot size and shape on inner region compression is studied for carbon, gold, gold + DT, etc. cy lindrical targets. Hydro and thermal properties of targets are investigated for different pulse shapes and durations. The numerical results on modelin g of possible experiments on TWAC-ITEP and SIS + Phelix facilities are disc ussed. Fundamental properties of beam-matter interaction, such as total ion stopping range and energy deposition, strongly affect target behavior unde r the impact of ion beams. These effects are discussed in the report. (C) 2 001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
