Abstract
We demonstrate that ion-beam elliptical focal spots can be rotated with ske w quadrupoles, by arbitrary angles, to map appropriately onto annular rings at either end of distributed-radiator heavy-ion fusion targets. The rotati on is accompanied by an increase in the area, a variation in the ellipticit y, and a shift in the axial location of the beam focal spot, all of which a re small enough that they may be acceptable. Possible further optimizations are discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
