Differences in cross-sections for left and right circularly polarized
light are analyzed for radiative and nonradiative inelastic scattering
by randomly oriented systems. It is shown that special experimental a
rrangements result in finite dichroism. In radiative scattering the di
chroism is related to the polarization state of the detected radiation
. In the nonradiative case we show, using time-independent resonant sc
attering theory, that dichroism also exists for a J = 1/2 intermediate
virtual hole in contrast to results based on the assumption that the
formation of the hole occurs separately from the decay.
