In this paper experimental results on the resonant Auger decay of adso
rbates are reported. These results have been obtained under conditions
where Raman effects should be observable, i.e. where the bandwidth of
the primary excitation used to create a resonant core hole state is b
elow the natural linewidth of this state given by the core hole lifeti
me. It is shown that under these conditions for adsorbates only a mino
rity of decay channels shows dispersion effects characteristic for res
onant Raman-type behavior in contrast to isolated systems, An explanat
ion for this rather unexpected finding is given on the basis of fast c
harge transfer relaxation processes between adsorbate and substrate.
