An objective definition of the protective area of laser eye protectors is d
iscussed. First an appropriate test method is described, which is based on
the current eye protection standard EN 168. For a variety of already CE typ
e approved laser eye protectors, i.e, for different goggle and spectacle ty
pes, results of corresponding measurements are shown. From these results th
e requirements on the vertical and horizontal angle ranges are derived, whi
ch have to be covered by laser eye protectors. This proposal will be implem
ented in the currently processed amendments of the laser safety standards E
N 207 and EN 208. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
