T. Albrecht et al., FIRST OBSERVATION OF FERROMAGNETISM AND FERROMAGNETIC DOMAINS IN A LIQUID-METAL, Applied physics A: Materials science & processing, 65(2), 1997, pp. 215-220
Miniaturized electromagnetic levitation has been used to undercool a l
iquid Co80Pd20 alloy below the Curie temperature T-C(1) = 1257 K of th
e liquid state. The magnetization of the undercooled liquid sample has
been measured as a function of temperature using a modified Faraday b
alance. Below T-C(1), the magnetization of the liquid metal shows a pl
ateau in the weak external field of mu(0)H(z) = 5.6 mT. The effect is
comparable to the behaviour of the corresponding solid phase, indicati
ng the onset of spontaneous magnetization with ferromagnetic domains.
T-C(1) is about 20 K lower than the Curie temperature of the solid pha
se T-C(s).
