The effect of a microcrystalline NiAl coating prepared by magnetron sputter
ing on the high-temperature oxidation resistance of a NiAl-TiC (20 vol.%) c
omposite was investigated in ail at 1000 and 1100 degreesC. It was found th
at the isothermal as well as the cyclic oxidation resistance of the NiAl-Ti
C composite were greatly improved by the microcrystalline NiAl coating. The
oxide scale formed on the NiAl-TiC composite was composed mainly of TiO2.
On the contrary, the scales formed on NiAl-TiC coated with microcrystalline
NiAl were only Al2O3.
