Abstract
Rotational tunneling of CH4 molecules in single wall and multiwall carbon n anotubes has been studied at low temperature by inelastic neutron scatterin g. Neutron measurements for several uptakes of CH4 show broad distributions of rotational energies. A simple model which is based on a Gaussian distri bution of local potentials was applied to the data. The obtained values are similar to values found for methane molecules in the mesopores of various SiO2 modifications. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
