Abstract
The region of validity for the potato-plateau transport fluxes in the near (magnetic) axis region is reexamined by considering the linear drift kineti c equation in the plateau regime. It is shown that the potato-plateau trans port fluxes are valid in a region of the order of a potato width around the axis as stated in Shaing and Hazeltine [Phys. Plasmas 4, 4331 (1997); 5, 9 53 (1998)]. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.
