Abstract
This paper gives a perspective on control problems in paper making. Tile st arting point is a review of a project that was carried our by Billerud and IBM in the early 1960s, which led to the development oi system identificati on and minimum variance control. The paper proceeds to review the present s tate of the art such as system development, process control technology auto nomous control and a user perspective. The key issues for the future are co design of process and control systems and tire supply of competence.
