Aligned alpha -SiC nanorods, several nanometers in diameter and with length
s up to 200 nm, were grown on the facets of simultaneously formed beta -SiC
particles by using an SiC rod as the anode to are-discharge in a helium at
mosphere. SEM, TEM and XRD were employed to characterize the prepared nanos
tructures. The small alpha -SiC nanorods exhibit excellent elastic deformat
ion ability and have a strong bond to the beta -SiC substrate. The possible
growth mechanism of the nanostructures is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Sci
