Several La0.5Ca0.5MnOy samples with identical oxygen content have been prep
ared by two different routes. Magnetic measurements show that their propert
ies are strongly dependent on the synthesis method even for materials with
the same anionic composition. A charge ordering state is reported for anion
ic deficient samples with 40% of Mn4+. The role of Ca in such a behavior is
